I'm having trouble sending email from my MIS-hosted email account
Recently, major Internet Services Providers have begun blocking outgoing email over the default port unless that email is being sent through their SMTP servers. While this is done to help fight the distribution of spam, it can be extremely irritating for customers, particularly if you are a user who expects to access email from multiple networks as you may find it necessary to change your SMTP settings depending on where you are. Although the SMTP server provided by MIS for your domain will be blocked over the default port in this situation, by enabling TLS encryption in your email client you will be able to avoid the block and use a single SMTP server over most networks.
How to set up your SMTP server and enable TLS encryption in your email client:
Outlook 2003
- In Microsoft Outlook, from the Tools menu select Email Accounts
- On the E-mail Accounts wizard window, select View or change existing email-accounts, and then click Next.
- Select your email account from the list and click Change.
- Change your Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) to mail.yourdomain.com, which should be the same as your Incoming Mail Server (POP3)
- Click More Settings.
- Under the Outgoing Server tab, check My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication and select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
- Under the Advanced tab, in Server Port Numbers, below Outgoing server (SMTP) select This server requires an encrypted connection (ssl).
- Click OK
- Click Test Settings. If the test is successful, click Next and then Finish. Otherwise, please contact MIS for assistance.
- Due to an issue with how Outlook handles some settings, your should quit and restart Outlook to ensure that the new settings are being used.
Outlook 2007
- In Microsoft Outlook, from the Tools menu select Email Accounts.

- In Microsoft Outlook, under the File menu, select the Info tab on the left. Click on the Account Settings button and select Account Settings from the menu that appears.
- Select your email account from the list and click Change.

- Click More Settings.
- Under the Outgoing Server tab, check My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication and select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
- Under the Advanced tab, in Server Port Numbers, below Outgoing server (SMTP) set Use the following type of encrypted connection to TLS.
- Click OK
- Click Test Settings. If the test is successful, click Next and then Finish. Otherwise, please contact MIS for assistance.
Outlook Express
- In Microsoft Outlook Express, from the Tools menu select Email Accounts
- In the Accounts window click the Mail tab.
- Select your email account from the list and click Properties.
- Click on the Servers tab.
- Change your Outgoing mail (SMTP) to mail.yourdomain.com, which should be the same as your Incoming mail (POP3)
- Under Outgoing Mail Server, select My server requires authentication and click the Settings button.
- Under Logon Information, make sure Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected. Click OK.
- Click on the Advanced tab.
- In Server Port Numbers, below Outgoing mail (SMTP) select This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL).
- Click Apply
- Click Close. Please attempt to send a new email message. If the email cannot be sent, please contact MIS for assistance.
How do I set up a VPN connection to MIS hosted services?
Please follow this guide to setup the backup MIS VPN connection to MIS hosted services. This backup VPN connection will gain you access to your hosted server or application when the Fortigate VPN connection is not working.
To setup the connection please follow the steps below. This guide assumes you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7.
- Open the control panel and you will see the figure below. Click on View network status and tasks.

- Click on Set up a new connection or network.

- Select Connect to a workplace and click Next.

- Select on No, create a new connection and click Next.

- Fill out your settings as per the screen shot below. Click Next.

- Enter your MIS Hosted Username and Password along with the domain CORP and click Connect.

At this point you should connect successfully to the backup VPN connection. if you receive an error please follow the steps below.
- If you see the connection error message below please do the following. Click on Set up the connection anyway.

- At the bottom right corner of your screen, click the
icon and the then right click on the VPN connection and select Properties.

- Click on the Security tab and change the type of VPN to Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) and click OK.

- Please test the connection and if you are still receiving issues please open a support ticket with MIS.
